Diverticulosis

Diverticulosis is a disease that affects colons. Diverticulosis breaks down the muscular and the mucus membrane lining the large intestine forms pouches. These pouches are known as diverticula, derived from the word diverted. Decaying particles of food or faucal matter are lodged within these pouches.
Some of the symptoms of Diverticulosis are pain in the left lower side of abdomen, diarrhea or constipation or alteration of two as well as bleeding. Many times this disease does not hurt. But in few cases, the diverticula get inflamed because their muscles have no walls and hence are not able to empty themselves. This condition is called diverticulosis and can be detected by x-rays. Middle aged people are more prone to this disease. The chances of incurring this disease raises with the age and 50% of the senior citizens tend to suffer from it.

The patient may face several complications due to the tendency of obstructed diverticula to perforate and gives rise to peri-colic abscess, peritonitis or fistula to bladder, vagina or other parts of the guts. There may be formation of inflammatory masses causing symptoms of obstruction, closely resembling carcinoma of the cancer, this is treated through surgery. Patient may also develop anemia. There might be bacteria present due to collection of stagnant food and faucal matter. They gobble up all the vitamin B, folic acid from the food and prevent them from reaching the blood. If your diet contains plenty of folic acid, take liberal amount of yogurt or acidophilus milk to destroy these bacteria. Increase of toxins generated by this condition may lead to intestinal and general problems.

Avoid following things to avoid diverticulosis:

• Avoid low-residue, highly refined food.
• Mental tension prevents the gas from escaping normally and is pressed against the intestinal walls, leading to formation of diverticula and ultimately diverticulosis.

Natural Treatment for Diverticulosis :

Doctors prescribe surgery, but surgery will not prevent the formation of diverticula again. Treating the problem through natural methods is a better option. Good digestive system, reduced formation of gas, strong intestinal walls avoid formation of diverticula and prevent stress to avoid tension from built in the body. A diet with lots of roughage with lots of seeds, nuts, whole grains, vegetables and fruits is beneficial. Eat sprouted seeds as they are easy to digest. Cooked cereals like millet, brown rice and oats are recommended. Consumption more soured milk like yogurt, buttermilk, potatoes and flax seeds daily. Take small frequent meals rather than few large ones. Avoid refined and processed foods, tea, coffee, condiments, pickles and animal foods.

If you tend to suffer from constipation along with diverticulosis, cure those using natural methods. Do not use purgatives. If constipation is not cured through diet, take a warm water enema to cleanse bowels. If you are overweight, change your diet to include natural foods to reduce weight.
Eat unprocessed wheat bran; it has five times the fiber of the ordinary whole wheat. One to three tablespoons of bran daily is recommended, depending upon the severity of the disease. Two tablespoons of bran are sufficient in many cases to allow stools to pass easily. Try this quantity for two weeks and than increase or decrease the quantity accordingly till you can pass stools once or twice a day without straining. Eating dry bran can be borrowing, sprinkle it on cereals, mix with porridge, add to soup or take with milk or water.

Certain fruit’s and vegetable’s juices can be quite beneficial for curing the disease. Juices of carrot, beet, green vegetables, papaya, apple, pineapple and lemon are beneficial.

Vitamin intake also plays an important part in the treatment of diverticulosis. Vitamin E strengthens the muscles and can be consumed liberally. Vitamin B provides folic acid, prevents stress and strengthens nerves. Vitamin C removes the toxic matter from the body. Minerals like potassium, manganese, calcium and magnesium strengthen muscular and nervous systems.

Diverticulosis can be cured successfully through natural methods. However, in rare cases where there are severe obstructions, perforations or abscess formation or where intestine is heavily involved, patient has to undergo surgery .
