Amnesia 

It is the general belief that as you age, your brain starts shrinking and thus it is difficult to remember names, words or at times even your own personal details. But new research has shown that human brain continues to grow in ways not thought possible even when you age. Neurons, the brain cells responsible for processing information do not die with age but just grow smaller. These smaller neurons do not function as efficiently as the larger ones. But it is possible to regrow or retrain them normally.




If you are growing old and are worried about not exercising your brain cells enough and suffering from amnesia, do not panic. Many people suffer from amnesia because they worry constantly about losing memory. Different types and levels of amnesia are seen in old people and short term memory is usually affected while the long term memory works well.

Symptoms of Amnesia:

• Verbal amnesia where you forget the word and names of the people.
• Temporary loss of memory where you forget your own identity like name, age, family background etc.
• Head, intolerance to noise and inability to concentrate.

Causes of Amnesia:

• Impairment of mental faculties.
• Impairment of brain cells due to diseases affecting them directly or indirectly due to poor blood supply due to circulation problems.
• Dullness of intellect and weakness of brain.
• Anxiety neurosis when you become obsessed with your own problems and thus do not pay attention to others.
• Excessive consumption of alcohol causes damage to blood cells especially if combined with prescription drugs.

Diet for Amnesia :

Concentrate on your diet to treat amnesia. Ensure that you get all the essential nutrients because the absence of even the single nutrient can result in anxiety neurosis if you are susceptible. Avoid tea, coffee, alcohol, chocolate, cola, all white flour products, sugar, food colourings, chemical additives, white rice and strong condiments. Take three meals a day with your breakfast consisting of fruits, milk and small amount of nuts and seeds. Your lunch should be made of steamed vegetables, whole wheat chappatis and a glass of buttermilk. Dinner should consist of green vegetables salad and a variety of sprouts like alfalfa seeds and mung beans, cottage cheese or a glass of buttermilk. Eat phosphorus-rich foods like cereals, pulses, nuts, fruit juices and milk. Drink as much of cow’s milk as possible to digest as it is highly beneficial.





Brahmi booti or Bacopa scrophulariacea is an herb which can play a pivotal role in treatment of amnesia. Dry seven grams of this herb in shade. Ground in water, along with seven kernels of almonds and four and half decigrams of pepper, strained and sweetened with honey. Drink this mixture for a fortnight on an empty stomach. Almond is very helpful in poor memory caused by brain weakness. It contains unique property to remove the brain debility and make it stronger. It preserves the vitality of the brain and cures ailments caused by nervous disorders. Immerse the almonds in the water for an hour. Remove their red coating. Rub them on a stone slab with sandalwood and make a fine paste. Take it mixed with butter or alone. You can also inhale 10 to 15 drops of almond oil through the nose.

Walnut is extremely good fruit for this problem. You can enhance its value when taken with raisins and figs. If you want to consume them alone, take 20 grams of walnuts.

You can eat a lot of fruits rich in phosphorus like figs, grapes, dates, oranges, almond, walnut and apple. They invigorate the brain cells and tissues and are a good cure for the loss of memory due to brain debility.

Mix a pinch of finely ground pepper with honey and take it in the morning and evening as it is highly beneficial in treatment of amnesia.
