Headache Natural Cure

Every person under the sun suffers from headache sometime in his life.  Headache is specific or particular to any age group, sex or race, any one can have a major or a minor headache.  Some headaches are functional, caused by some temporary upsets and are not associated with any organic changes in the brain. It is a natural way of body to indicate that there is something wrong with it. The pain experienced often is caused by the irritation to nerve endings in the shoulder, neck, scalp muscles and the smooth muscles that encircle the blood vessels present in this area.

Causes of Headache

  • Allergy, especially related to certain foods. The most common suspects are chocolate, strong cheese, caffeine in coffee, tea and cola, yoghurt, processed, cured and preserved meats, alcohols, citrus fruits and their juices like orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime and pineapple, other fruits like bananas, raisins, red plums, canned figs and avocados and some vegetables like broad beans, peas and onions. There could be signs of sneezing and diarrhea.
  • Intense emotions, where a person might be happy on the outside but simmering about any issue inside or bearing a grudge toward others.
  • Migraine with pain on one side, with nausea and vomiting accompanying the pain. The patient might see black spots or a brilliant zigzag line in front of his eyes or blurring or blackening out of vision. He may also experience tingling, numbness or weakness in the arm or leg.
  • Eye strain
  • High blood pressure
  • Infection
  • Low blood sugar
  • Nutritional deficiency
  • Tension
  • Presence of poisons and toxins in the body

The frequency of headaches decreases with age except if for the depressed or psychoneurotic patients. Migraine too decreases with the age and in some cases disappears. Headache due to tension is rare. In case of headache due to cervical spondylosis the pain starts in the hindmost bone of the skull and may radiate forward to the vertex. This limits the movements of the neck and when the patient tries to rotate the neck, pain might aggravate.

Usually, doctors recommend pain-killers or tranquilizers to cure headache. But these pain killers and tranquilizers provide only a temporary relief and do not target the cause. Additionally, they cause nervous debility, weakens the heart and result in other complications. The best remedy to prevent headaches is by developing physical resistance through proper nutrition, exercise and constructive thinking.

To solve frequent headache problem start with a short juice fast. Take fresh fruit and vegetable juices, diluted with water on 50:50 ratios, six times a day. This will ease the load on digestive system and will save energy which can be utilized for more important functions. This will take reduce load from blood and lymph. Once fasting is over, structure your diet in such a way as to put least strain on the digestive system. Include lots of fresh and dried fruits in breakfast. Take protein-rich lunch. Eat starchy foods like whole wheat bread, cereals, rice or potatoes and raw salads for dinner. Avoid spices, Tomatoes, sour buttermilk and oily foods.

Diet plays a vital role in treating headaches. Avoid caffeine-containing medications and painkillers. If you see a marked improvement, try adding a food item one at a time after every three days or once a week. If you experience headache after adding new item, you have latched on to the culprit and avoid it. Caffeine should be avoided in case of frequent headaches.

Home Remedy for Headache

Lemon is very effective home remedy in treatment of bilious headache. Drink lemon juice. To get relief from headache due to heat apply lemon crust paste on the forehead. Yellow rind of the lemon, freshly pared off to each temple is helpful for immediate relief.

Apple is the most effective fruit for treating all types of headaches. Remove the upper rind and the inner hard portion of an apple; add salt to the left part and eat it in the morning for a week.

Henna flowers are quite effective for headache due to hot scorching sum. Make paste of henna flowers by rubbing them in vinegar and apply it over forehead.

Cinnamon can be used in treating headaches caused by cold air. Make of fine paste of it in water. Apply this paste over the temples and headaches for relief.

Water is also effective in treating headaches. Drink large amount of water. Some water applications like cleansing enema with the water temperature at 98.6 degree Fahrenheit, hot foot bath, a cold throat pack, and frequent application of cold towels wrung out from very hot water to the back of the neck, a cold compress at 40 to 60 degree Fahrenheit applied to the head and face or an alternate spinal compress.  Applying hot fomentation over the abdomen before sleeping will relieve headaches caused by stomach and liver upsets.

Yogic kriyas like jalneti and kunjal, pranayamas like anulome-viloma, shitali and sitkari and asanas like uttanpadasana, sarvangasana, paschimottanasana, halasana and shavasana very helpful.
